First mention of natural hydrogen in IEA report
For the first time, natural hydrogen is cited in an International Energy Agency (IEA) report, Global Hydrogen Review 2023. This one reminds us that the Earth continuously produces natural hydrogen underground from different processes (oxidation of ferrous iron minerals, water radiolysis, organic matter maturation and outgassing from the Earth’s mantle).
The assumption that Earth’s hydrogen potential exceeds current demand is put forward. Earth’s resources may even be able to meet the growing demands of decarbonization scenarios.
Examples given in the report show several industrial companies at different stages of development, from permit application to first positive drilling. Natural hydrogen exploration has significantly increased, with more than 40 active companies as in 2023, compared to only 3 companies in 2020.
Dr. Eric C. Gaucher wrote a synthesis for this report based on his position paper on natural hydrogen (European geologist, 2023).
